Making sense of dividing

Division clicks once children see it as sharing or grouping, not just a new symbol:

  • Lean on the times tables. Division is the other side of multiplying, so a familiar table makes it far easier.
  • Share it out. Twelve shared between three is something you can act out with counters or sketch quickly.
  • Keep sessions short. A few questions a day keeps it gentle and steady.
  • Start with no remainders. Clean shares first, then introduce remainders when the idea is comfortable.
