Easing into taking away

Subtraction often takes a little longer to settle than adding. A few gentle steps:

  • Stay within ten first. Small take-aways build the picture before bigger numbers and borrowing.
  • Use a number line. Counting back along a line makes taking away something you can see.
  • Little and often. A short daily sheet keeps it ticking over without weighing the day down.
  • Mind the order. Some children mix up which number comes first. A calm reminder is plenty.
