About the book

Fenn and the Skipping Stone begins at the river's edge, where Fenn picks up a flat, smooth stone and tries to skip it across the water. It sinks. Fenn watches the ripples, picks up another stone, and tries again. The river is patient and so is the story. One throw at a time, one small moment at a time, Fenn keeps going.

There is nothing dramatic about what happens. Fenn does not shout or give up. There is just the stone in the hand, the water ahead, and the trying again. That quiet, stubborn rhythm is what the book is built on. Warm, painterly pages and soft, unhurried sentences give the whole story the feeling of a long afternoon beside a river, where the only thing to do is keep going, gently.

This is a gentle picture book about trying again, written for ages 3 to 6. It is the sort of story that fits a moment when something has not gone right and a child needs to see, in the simplest way, that one more try is worth it. Read it slowly and let Fenn do the showing.

Fenn and the Skipping Stone is a picture book about perseverance that sits happily beside stories about big feelings, because trying and not getting there yet can bring its own big feeling. It is gentle rather than instructive, a story to share rather than a lesson to deliver.

Fenn and the Skipping Stone is Book 4 in the Fenn's River Days series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint.
