About the book

Fenn and the Little Seed begins with something very small: a seed set down by the door, pressed into a little pot of soil, and then the long, unhurried wait to see what it will do. Nothing happens straight away, and the story does not pretend otherwise. Fenn checks, and tends, and checks again, and the days move slowly in the way that growing things require.

The heart of this book is patience, the ordinary kind that asks a child to keep going even when there is nothing yet to see. Fenn does not give up. The pot stays in its spot, the water comes in its quiet little amounts, and somewhere underneath the soil, something is getting on with its work. That invisible effort is the whole quiet drama of the story.

Fenn and the Little Seed is a picture book about slowing down and trusting the pace of living things. The sentences are short and the pages breathe. There is warmth in the waiting rather than frustration, and the scenes around the riverbank settle a child into a world that moves at its own gentle rhythm. It reads well with no particular hurry.

This is a gentle nature picture book for ages 3 to 6, and it suits any moment in the day when a child needs something calm and absorbing. The story has a tenderness to it that young readers recognise, the feeling of caring for something small and giving it time.

Fenn and the Little Seed is Book 3 in the Fenn's River Days series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Like all our stories it is kind, unhurried, and illustrated with warmth.
