What readers are saying
This is a very sweet, beautifully illustrated story about a little hedgehog and starting her day. She washes her paws, makes her bed, eats her breakfast and gets ready to face the day. An excellent book for smaller children.
About the book
Hazel and the Bright Morning begins the way the best mornings do: with the sun already up and a small hedgehog ready to meet it. One soft step at a time, Hazel moves through the cheerful business of getting ready for the day. The curtains come open, the breakfast is warm, and each familiar part of her morning falls into place. There is a lightness to it, an easy and unhurried moving-forward that feels entirely right.
This is a gentle morning picture book, and it earns that description honestly. Nothing in Hazel's morning is rushed or performed. The pages have the same quality as a good start to the day: room to breathe, something pleasant around each corner, and a steady pace that carries a child through from waking to ready, without any fuss. Short, warm sentences and bright, painterly scenes give the whole thing the feeling of sunshine coming in through a small round window.
Hazel and the Bright Morning is written for ages 3 to 6, and it suits the morning reading slot well. Some families find the getting-ready stage easier when there is a story running alongside it, something that shows a familiar order and makes it feel pleasant rather than pressured. Hazel's routine is simple and warm, the kind a small child can recognise as their own and be glad of.
This is Book 4 in the Hazel the Hedgehog series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Like all our stories it is calm, kind and unhurried, with human-curated, human-approved illustrations. If your child knows Hazel from her cosy nights, this is the other side of her day. The same steady world, the same small hedgehog, now with morning light coming in.
