About the book

Hazel and the Brave Walk is for the little one who feels small at the edge of something new and decides to take the first step anyway. The day is winding down, Hazel's burrow is warm and gold, and then she sees them: tiny lights, far across the dusky meadow, with a soft thread of music drifting in.

The lights look a long way off and Hazel feels very small. But small is not the same as scared. One step, then the next, she walks through the tall grass toward the warm glow, all the way to a clearing where gentle lanterns sway like little moons. She had been brave, and being brave had felt warm.

There is no big drama here and nothing to overcome except the distance and the feeling. That is deliberate. The book is built around the moment just before a child does the thing, and it stays there long enough for the feeling to be recognised rather than rushed past.

Parents and carers reach for it when a child is nervous about a first day, a new place, or doing something on their own, and when they want a wind-down story with a brave, calm heart rather than an exciting one. It reads aloud slowly and it is meant to.

Hazel and the Brave Walk is Book 2 in the Hazel the Hedgehog series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Paperback, 24 pages, for ages 3 to 6. A gentle story idea to enjoy together, not medical, sleep or behaviour advice. Every child and family is different.
