About the book
Hazel and the Big Feeling begins with something familiar: a feeling that arrives without warning and fills up all the room inside. Hazel the hedgehog does not quite know what to do with it at first. It is too big to tuck away and too full to ignore. So she sits with it, names it quietly, and waits to see what happens next.
This is a picture book about big feelings, told in the gentle way that Hazel's world always works. There is no rush to fix things or push the feeling away. The story moves slowly and kindly, the way a calm voice does, giving a young child space to recognise something of themselves in Hazel without any fuss being made about it.
Hazel and the Big Feeling is for ages 3 to 6, and it works well at any time of day when things feel a little heavy. Some children will want to talk after the last page. Others will just want to sit quietly for a moment. Both are fine. The book does not ask anything of the child except to follow Hazel through.
It is written in short, soft sentences with warm, painterly illustrations, the kind that give a child something to look at while a feeling settles. The grown-up reading aloud can go at whatever pace feels right, slow down at the fuller pages, linger where the child lingers.
Hazel and the Big Feeling is Book 5 in the Hazel the Hedgehog series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Like every book in the series, it is calm, unhurried, and kind, with human-curated, human-approved illustrations.
Paperback, 24 pages. A good one to have nearby on ordinary days.
