How it works

  1. Open the name tracing generator.
  2. Type the child's name (or a word to practise).
  3. Choose dotted or grey letters, and pick the lines.
  4. Press Make sheet, then Print or Save as PDF.

A gentle start to writing

A child's own name is usually the first word they want to write, which makes it the perfect place to begin:

  • Start with the dotted outline so there is plenty of support, then move to grey letters, then to copying.
  • Say each letter as they trace it, so sound and shape go together.
  • Keep it short. A line or two a day is gentler than a whole page at once.
  • Capital first, then lower case. Most children write the first letter as a capital and the rest in lower case.

Free name tracing worksheets: common questions

Are name tracing worksheets free?

Yes. Every sheet is free to make and print, with no sign-up and no email. It runs in your browser, so the names you type are never saved or sent anywhere.

Can I trace any name or word?

Yes. Type any name or word, and the sheet is made from exactly that, so it suits every child in the class.

Dotted letters or solid grey?

Both. Choose a dotted outline to trace over for beginners, or solid grey letters to write on top of for a little more independence.

What age is name tracing for?

Roughly ages 3 to 7, from a first go at a name up to neater handwriting. You choose the word, so it fits the child.
