About the book

Oliver and the Rainy Day begins on a grey morning, when the sky is heavy and something inside Oliver feels heavy too. The rain taps at the window and the day has that still, closed-in feeling. Oliver is not sure what to do with the mood he is carrying, only that it is there, sitting in his chest like a small, stubborn cloud.

The story moves gently through Oliver's day as the weather does what weather does: it comes, it stays a while, and then slowly, it begins to change. Nothing is forced and nothing is solved too quickly. The feeling is given room, the way you might give a child room to sit with something difficult before it softens on its own.

This is a picture book about big feelings for ages 2 to 5, the kind written for a rainy afternoon when a little one cannot quite name what is wrong. The sentences are short and unhurried. The scenes are soft and warm despite the grey outside, and the overall feeling by the end is one of quiet settling, of the sky clearing bit by bit.

Oliver and the Rainy Day is best read slowly, with the child leaning in. It does not rush past the feeling or wrap it up too neatly. It simply sits alongside it, the way a good story can, and lets the page turn when it is ready.

Oliver and the Rainy Day is Book 6 in the Oliver the Owl series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Like all our stories it is calm, kind, and unhurried, with human-curated, human-approved illustrations.

Paperback, 26 pages, and a good one to reach for on the grey days.
