About the book
Oliver and the First Day begins with a feeling most small ones will know: standing somewhere brand new, with a flutter of nerves and no idea yet how things will go. Oliver the owl is at the threshold of somewhere unfamiliar, looking in, working out what to do next. The pages do not rush him. They let him feel what he feels, look around slowly, and find his way forward at his own pace.
This is a gentle picture book about being brave, written for the moment just before a child takes that first step. Not the bold, loud kind of brave, just the quiet kind. The kind that takes a breath, notices what is around, and goes anyway. Short sentences and warm, painterly scenes make room for a child to sit with the story rather than race through it.
Oliver and the First Day is a good book for the day before something new, or the night after. It does not tell a child how to feel. It simply shows what courage can look like when it is small and honest and real. For ages 2 to 5, it is a story that can be read more than once and land differently each time.
Oliver and the First Day is Book 5 in the Oliver the Owl series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Like every book in the series, it is calm, kind and unhurried, with human-curated, human-approved illustrations. Oliver's world is a steady one, and steady worlds are good places to practise new things.
Paperback, 26 pages. Read it the evening before the big day, or on the morning of, in a quiet voice and without hurry.
