About the book

Bramble and the Stepping Stones follows a small, unhurried creature on a simple outdoor errand: crossing a stream to reach a sunny rock on the other side. The stones are there, one after another, and all Bramble has to do is take them one at a time. Not too fast, not all at once. Just the next stone, then the next.

It is a picture book about patience, about how the only way across is to keep going, slowly and steadily, without skipping ahead. There are wobbles along the way, and a moment of wanting to turn back, but the far bank is always waiting and the stones are always solid underfoot. By the time Bramble arrives, the warmth of the rock makes the crossing feel exactly worth it.

The pacing of the pages matches the journey. Short sentences, warm painterly scenes, and plenty of room to breathe. A grown-up reading aloud will find it easy to slow down, and a child will find something steady and reassuring in the rhythm. This is not a book with a rush in it.

Bramble and the Stepping Stones is a gentle picture book about patience and not giving up, written for ages 3 to 6. It suits any child who has stood at the edge of something and wondered whether to try. There is nothing frightening here, just the quiet encouragement of one small step, taken well.

Bramble and the Stepping Stones is Book 2 in the Bramble's Slow Days series from Lantern Path Books, our independent Australian picture-book imprint. Like all our stories it is calm, kind and unhurried, with human-curated, human-approved illustrations.
